Modern studies in western languages use the term ‘Newar Buddhism’ to refer to the distinctive Buddhism of the Nepla Mandala, i.e. the Kathmandu Valley. It is the traditional Mahāyāna and Vajrayāna Buddhism practiced by the Newars, the original inhabitants of the valley. Newar Buddhism is the last living Sanskrit Buddhism in the world since the disappearance of Buddhism from India in the 13th century.

This lecture gives an introduction to Newar Buddhism and describes its significant features. It also attempts to outline the history of the Buddhism in the Kathmandu Valley, quoting from sources such as the Svayambhū-Purāa. Thus, the purpose of this lecture is to draw a general picture of the Newar Buddhism and its uniqueness.

Manik Bajracharya has the double qualification of having received the traditional Newar Vajracarya education, and being a trained in modern academics as well. He teaches at the Lotus Academic College in Patan, KTM. (http://lrcnepal.org/lac/about.htm )
