Annual 10-Day Retreat - June 2 - 11, 2009

Our annual ten-day retreat is a wonderful opportunity to delve more deeply into the Dharma and to reconnect with one’s stable center of practice. This year we are very fortunate to have Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche guiding the retreat. Rinpoche will teach upon the mind-training tradition of Parting from the 4 Attachments. Rinpoche will base his teaching on a commentary on these pith instructions by the great Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo. You can read more about the retreat topic here.

This retreat will be a combination of listening, contemplation and meditation. Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche will teach and answer questions in the morning. In the afternoon, we are also fortunate to have an experienced meditator, Lama Choedak Rinpoche, give a revision of the morning teachings and guide students in calm abiding meditation.

Calm abiding meditation (Shamatha) is a pan Buddhist meditation practice without which even the practice of Vipassana is only name. Without achieving calm abiding meditation and understanding of Vipassana, the visualization of deity yoga may be a mere description of iconography. With the meditative qualities of stability, clarity and awareness, one may gain the wisdom to discern the nature of phenomena and the four seals of Dharma. One may study Buddhist philosophy arguing the lack of inherent existence of self and phenomena, but the actual realization only occurs through doing and achieving shamatha.

The schedule below also has 2 suggested sessions for individual meditations. Students are welcome to stay at the IBA campus or participate in the retreat while staying in one of the many Guesthouses in the area. Registration information.

Who Is Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche? - full biography

Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche

Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche was born in Bhutan in 1961. He is one of the incarnations of the Khyentse lineage which holds the approach of Rimey, the great non-sectarian approach. The central Rimey Guru, Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo (1820-1892), was an authority on all the different teachings of Buddhism in the Tibetan tradition and the pre-Buddhist Bön teachings and shunned sectarian bias - encouraging his students to appreciate the profundity of all the existing traditions. Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo was one of the incarnations of Rigdzin Jimge Lingpa who is traced back to King Trison Detsen. He himself, as he predicted, had several incarnations including the first Beru Khyentse, Dzongsar Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö (1894-1959), and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Tashi Paljor (1910-1991). continue...

Registration Information for the 10-Day Retreat

Update:
Sorry but This Event is Completely Sold Out.
The waiting list is now also closed.
We only have a few spaces left for students who wish to partake of all 3 summer courses, June 2 - Sept 13. View all 3 courses here.

The teachings from the retreat will be available online for you to listen and download approximately one day after Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche teaches. Even though it is now not possible for you to take part in the retreat in Kathmandu, you may do your own retreat at home and follow the teachings online.
On June 2nd visit: http://www.siddharthasintent.org/

The retreat starts on Tuesday June 2nd but we expect the participants to arrive earlier to register. All student must attend the orientation at 4pm on June 1st. During the orientation session, students will receive an Orientation package, admission tickets, schedule and rules for the retreat.

Accommodations
The International Buddhist Academy's Teaching Hall can accommodate 500 people but the IBA campus only has 60 rooms available for students. Since there are more than 60 people interested in participating in the retreat, logically we will give preference to those that wish to atttend 2 or more courses. This means the following:

Those that register for the retreat and the following 1 month philosophy course (Bodhicharyavatara by Shantideva) can eat and live at the IBA campus. Those who only wish to attend the 10-day retreat are welcome to register and participate in the retreat but they must live and eat outside of the IBA campus. That will not be a problem since there are many affordable guesthouse and hotel options near IBA in the Bouddha area of Kathmandu. Please visit this page for information on accommodations.

Fees

The total cost for the Ten-Day Retreat is US$180. This covers a private room and three meals a day for up to a 14 day stay, (including 4 extra days before or after the retreat to facilitate travel arrangements). Students selecting this option (to live on campus during the retreat) must pay the fees for the retreat (US$180) and the 1 month Bodhicharyavatara course (US$285) in full at the IBA office before June 2nd.
