Passport and Visa
Prospective students will need to arrange for their own air travel to Kathmandu, Nepal. International students should have a passport that is valid for at least six months from their date of travel. All foreign nationals require a temporary residence permit (visa). Visas can either be applied for at the airport, on entry to Kathmandu, or at a Nepalese embassy or consulate abroad.

You can obtain one of the following three types of tourist Visa:
  • 15-day multiple entry for $25
  • 30-day multiple entry for $40
  • 90-day multiple entry for $100
At the Airport application forms are available on the tables and counters as you enter the immigration area. Bring TWO (2) passport photos with you and the correct change in US$ or Nepalese Rupees to facilitate the process. If you have your photos, passport and correct US funds, the airport visa procedure is streamlined and painless. Ask for a multiple entry visa if you plan to visit India.

On expiry of the visa, tourists can obtain a Visa extensions for a minimum of 15 days for $2 per day. The Visa is good for the duration of the time period you requested when applying for the visa, and MUST be extended BEFORE that period expires. Students must apply at the immigration office in Kathmandu with one passport photo and correct amount in Nepalese Rupees. Tourists are allowed to stay in Nepal for up to a maximum of 150 days per calendar year.

The estimated cost is around Rs450 for prepaid taxi (the desirable choice), available at the pre-paid taxi booth before you exit the glass doors. IBA tel: 447-9218.

Health and Medical
Students are responsible for their own health and there own travel arrangements. If you have a medical condition, please consult with your physician if a trip to Nepal is suitable for you. Although most common medicines are available in Kathmandu, students who need medication are advised to stock up on their supplies before coming to the IBA in case their medication or the particular brand that they use is not available in Kathmandu. Most medicines available in Kathmandu are manufactured in India. Generic brand antibiotics are available at greatly reduced costs ($1 or $2).

iPlease consult your travel agent about purchasing travel insurance and medical insurance. The IBA will not be responsible for sickness incurred by student while studying at the IBA. Although in Nepal, it is not possible to purchase long-term insurance that covers international students, a list of travel insurance providers can be found at www.hasbrouck.org. Please note that none of these are affilitated nor endorsed by the IBA. This is one option: www.worldnomads.com

It is good idea to contact your local travel clinic or public health center that specializes in immunization for travelers abroad to arrange for an initial appointment at least six weeks before you travel. Most travelers only receive the Typhoid immunization. Some suggested immunizations for students who will go trekking or visit rural areas are:
  1. Tetanus, diphtheria and polio (combination shot is good for ten years)
  2. Hepatitis A (contact with contaminated food and water can cause hepatitis A)
  3. Hepatitis B
  4. Japanese encephalitis
  5. Typhoid fever
  6. Cholera (oral immunization dose)
